–Virginia Dwan (1968)

Most of us are repelled by the conditions of our

present state. Present. Avant-Garde is an inappropriate term in art. It is a
military term and that is abhorrent. It is also illogical. We can only exist
and create in the Now. Even “Science Fiction” is taking place right now. Those
artists who are termed “avant-garde,” “minimal,” or “way out” are, I am
convinced, those who see most clearly this condition, the real present moment.
They present to us either the image of ourselves as we truly are, or they
represent space as known and unknown today or time, which is perhaps the
greatest mystery. One used to look at art. Today art reflects our image back
upon us. That is what makes it so difficult.

–Virginia Dwan (1968)

>> Art News, Sep. 9, 2022

>> Artforum, Sep. 9, 2022

>> Artnet News, Sep. 9, 2022

>> The New York Times, Sep. 18, 2022

Robert Smithson: The Collected Writings. Jack Flam, éd. (University of California Press, 1996), pp. 298-99.

>> Randy Kennedy, "How to Conserve an Art That Lives in a Lake?" The New York Times, 18 nov. 2009
>> Art:21 Blog: "Extending the Conservation Framework: A Site-Specific Conservation Discussion with Francesca Esmay" by Richard McCoy
